China earthquake victim pig doubles in size

A pig that survived 36 days trapped under the debris from the Chinese earthquake has doubled in size since his rescue. The pig lost two-thirds of its body weight while he was trapped, when he survived by eating charcoal and drinking rainwater. Named Zhu Jianqiang, he has since been adopted by a museum where he has become the most popular attraction. Curators say Zhu is recovering well and has a new playmate, a goat which also survived the earthquake. He has already doubled in size from 50kg to nearly 100kg.

US researchers say that they have figured out how some snails extraordinarily crawl upside down at the waters surface, which they cannot actually grip.
Eric Lauga of the University of California, San Diego says that water snails do so by creating little ripples in the surface, and transform them into a foothold.
He and his colleagues studied the common freshwater snail Sorbeoconcha physidae, which crawl at a speed of 0.2 cm per second, and stay buoyant by trapping some air inside their shells.
The researchers observed that the snalils foot wrinkles into little rippling waves with a wavelength of about a millimetre, which produces corresponding waves in the mucus layer that it secretes between the foot and the air.
They say that surface tension constrains the deformation of the mucus, and causes parts of the mucus film to get squeezed, and parts to get stretched.
According to them, this creates a pressure difference that pushes the foot forwards.
The researchers believe that their findings may point to a new method of propulsion.

It happened in a store at Grand Rapids (Michigan, US). Two different armed robbers hit a Grand Rapids convenience store in one evening, taking money from the same store clerk on both occasions. Tommy Gutierrez, 31, works at the Shell station on the city's northwest side.

The robbers struck a little more than two hours apart on Sunday night.

Gutierrez told WZZM-TV he gave the thieves what they asked for and no one got hurt.

Gutierrez said he has no plans to quit his job at the store because he has bills to pay and a wife and children to support.

As a continued environmentally conscious effort Sony has added one more hand-powered prototype to their eco-list called the "Twirl N' Take". It looks and moves kind of like a pizza cutter, but it doesn't cut pizza. It takes digital pictures instead.

The "Twirl N' Take" has a rubber wheel on top that that needs to be twirled across a flat surface for about 15 seconds to power it up. This will create enough power to take one picture. The pictures are not high quality, there is no flash and no LCD screen is available to immediately view the pictures, but because twirling is all that is needed to power it up there is never a need for the use of batteries either. Because there is no need for batteries there is also no need to worry about the batteries dieing on you while taking pictures.

The other benefit of course is that the camera's no need for batteries is very eco-friendly. If there is no need for batteries then there aren't any batteries to throw away or recharge over and over again. Think of all the picture taking possibilities on vacation or elsewhere.

Handfuls of cash were hurled into the streets as police chased suspects in a bank robbery Tuesday. One person was arrested after a pursuit through two counties at speeds topping 100 mph, Los Angeles police said.

Costa Mesa police Sgt. Bryan Glass said three masked gunmen held up a Downey Savings branch, fled in a getaway car and then switched to another vehicle. The second car led police on a chase along freeways from Orange County into Los Angeles County.

In Los Angeles, the chase moved from freeways onto streets as someone in the car threw at least three wads of money out a car window. The car eventually crashed into a palm tree at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza, and the four men inside ran off.

Los Angeles police said one man was arrested there as officers searched for other suspects. Police did not immediately say whether any money was found in the car, and there was no word on what happened to the currency thrown out during the chase.

Performing the Nazi salute is illegal in Germany, but Roland boasted of his pet’s talent, even to the police. Adolf is now at an animal shelter while his owner will spend the next five months in a Berlin jail. The staff is attempting to retrain the dog to do a shake-a-paw movement instead of the salute. Roland, 58, may not get the pet back. He was planning to have the animal put down on the anniversary of Hitler’s suicide.
